Compliments – $1!
Posted in: Jessie Roberts
So, Relay season is upon us again and as a kickoff, I’m selling Gertrude Hawk candy bars at work. There’s not whole lot of work required… I just left them on my desk and sent out an e-mail to our company.
My good deed seems to have repercussions, however. I passed a co-worker in the hallway this morning and after admiring his clothing choice, said “You look handsome today!” His response – “You just want to bribe me to buy a candy bar.” HA! I will now also be charging for compliments – all money to go to the American Cancer Society.

I hate first date small talk! It’s awkward, uncomfortable, and let’s be honest, YOU really don’t want to hear “What do you like to do in your spare time?” again either!
My poor father has been “concerned” about me and my dating life for some time now and has been begging me to let him introduce me to a guy who “really wants to meet me.” I finally gave into the pressure and believe it or not, the guy seemed more appealing than any guy I had ever imagined my dad would think was “my type.” He described this guy as someone with “muscles and tattoos on his muscles.” Although, in actuality, this guy was tall and lanky, we hit it off and exchanged numbers.
He waited the obligatory 3 days then texted me (by the way, guys, you score more points if you call!). We had awkward first date conversation and the topic turned to travel… “What’s your favorite place to visit?” I then told funny/interesting anecdotes (at least in my mind… You know, the type of stories you dig for on first dates to make yourself seem more interesting!
) about how I love to spend time in Nashville… Then I asked if he’d ever been. “No, that really doesn’t interest me.”
Ouch! I think that was his not so polite way of confirming what I already knew – we were never going to experience second date conversation. Single but not bitter…

Single But Not Bitter

I just wore my phone battery down to 10% talking to my friend, Suzanne, about the one thing all women in all walks and stages of life can’t talk about enough – men! Whether you’re married, it’s “complicated”, you’ve fallen for a friend or simply haven’t found “the one” yet, there’s nothing like sharing your stories about the opposite sex with your girlfriends.
Before I rang in the New Year, another friend, Karen, made me promise I’d go on at least two dates a month to help me weed out what I liked and what I didn’t.
I took her advice and spent October and part of November “seeing someone” until he went MIA… Last I heard (or Facebook stalked), he was dating his step-sister. True story!
Since then, I’ve gone on several dates, some great, some not so great; either way, some made for some great stories… Enough to kill 90% of my phone battery. So, per Suzanne’s advice, I’m going to share some of the most noteworthy with you. I figure if the majority of my DVD collection is made up of chick flicks, there’s a good chance yours is too! So, here’s introducing “Single But Not Bitter!”
P.S. – Guys, don’t let this blog deter you from asking me out on a date… I’m just giving you a peek into what we gals talk about when you’re not around anyway.

Someone sent me this survey today. I had so much fun filling out! My answers are below. Copy the blank one and play along!
The 5 most important songs, albums or concerts and why they are/were so meaningful to you:
1. Mary Chapin Carpenter – “The Long Way Home”
Sometimes we all need a little reminder to slow down and enjoy the things that really matter in life. “Accidents and inspiration lead you to your destination” is one of the greatest song lyrics ever written.
2. Johnny Rivers – “Secret Agent Man”
This song plays a major role in one of my most vivid childhood memories. My dad would put this record on and I would stand on his feet and dance. It still stops me in my tracks when I hear it.
3. Billy Joel – “Only the Good Die Young”
This is my go-to song when I need a pick me up. How can you not smile while listening to it?
4. Eric Clapton – “Wonderful Tonight”
When I was in fourth grade, I decided this song would be my wedding song. I haven’t changed my mind.
5. John Mellencamp – “I Need a Lover”
I own two concert hoodies – John Mellencamp is one of them. I’ve been a fan since I could remember… And c’mon, who can’t relate to this song?
Bonus Questions:
A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Oasis “Be Here Now”
An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Phish
An album you played or listened to incessantly: Eric Church “Carolina” and “The Essential Mary Chapin Carpenter” (I’ve played the CD so many times, it skips.)
One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Melissa Etheridge “I Run For Life”
